A Witch Shall Not Judge Another Witch For The Rule Of Three

The controversial subject for the rule of three. This is one of the most highly contested subjects. Is the rule of three real or is it just something made up by wiccan elders to scare the newbies into submission?

There are several different thoughts on the rule of three. The rule of three, also called the Law of threefold return, is given to newly witches in some magical traditions for the purpose to be cautious. It keeps people who just discovered wicca from thinking they have Magical Super Powers. It also makes a person think cautiously about not performing negative magic without putting some serious thought into the consequences.

An early personification of the rule of three appeared in Gerald Gardner novel High Magic Aid on page 188 “When thou receivest good, So equally art band to return good three folds” This is the impression among new witches that there is a spirtual law that everything you do comes back to you.

Now think about it. It is really not a bad concept because if you surround yourself with good things then good things should come back to you. Filling your life with negativity will bring similar unpleasantness into your life. Now let's stop and think, does this really mean there is a karmic law in effect? AND WHY the number 3? Why not 5 or 10?

No one likes the thought or idea of wiccan and witches running around flinging curses and hexes so the law of three is quite effective in making people stop and think before they act.

A competent magic worker is going to stop and think about the consequences of their work. If one's ramification of one's actions may be negative, that may make us stop and say “HEY, Maybe I better rethink this for a bit.

Many wiccans, witches, pagans see the laws of three as a useful standard to live by. As to why the number of 3 is chosen Well, Why not? Three is known as a magical number.

Some pagans uses different interpretaion of the Law of three which the idea of it is to prevent irresponsible behavior.

One of the sensible interpretations of the rule of three is that your actions affect you on three separate levels which would be Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual. This means that before you act, you need to consider how your deeds will impact your body, mind and soul.

Another thought is cosmic sense. What you do in your lifetime will be revisited on you three times more in your next life. That is if you accept the concept of reincarnation.

Ultimately, whether you accept the law of three as a cosmic morality or a part of life, little instructions manual. It comes down to that it is up to you to rule your own behavior.
